Facebook gets a new algorithm: what next?





You may have already seen it come along on social media: Facebook is going to change its algorithm. In our previous blog we had already indicated that Facebook was experimenting with the explore feed. It seems that the changes there are being implemented in the new algorithm. Where you now see information coming through from well-known brands and large companies, you will soon see mainly content from your friends. At least that's the point. Facebook wants the platform to be more about interacting with your friends. Where it was primarily intended. But why does Facebook do this and what does it mean for you as a company? Reason for a new algorithm

Why is Facebook introducing this new algorithm that many people will have thought? -''One of our big focus areas for 2018 is making sure the time we all spend on Facebook is time well spent.' Mark Zuckerberg has made several statements about this, and the reason is that he wants people to spend less time on Facebook. Huh? Less time? Yes, you read it right. Mark responds to the discussion about facebook being addictive. The platform is now mainly seen as harmful and Mark wants to change that. So less passive scrolling through your timeline but real interaction with your friends.

Consequences for your business

The first thought of many companies is that the new algorithm is not a good development for them. Because Facebook will focus more on content from friends, content from companies will automatically become less visible. At the moment, many brands depend on Facebook and receive many customers through this platform. Users respond to a company's message more often than a friend's message. The reach of companies will therefore decrease considerably with the new algorithm.

New opportunities for businesses

But of course we're not going to sit down with the suits. What are new possibilities for your company with the algorithm? Facebook has indicated that advertising will still work. Well, of course they make money from that. When you promote a post, it will be featured in your followers' timeline. These posts should still be interacted. That is the case at the moment. Is there no interaction? Then Facebook won't show the message again.

Create moving content

In addition, it is wise to focus more on video or continue to do so if you are already working on it. Facebook says it continues to pay close attention to videos because there is generally a high interaction. So try streaming a live video once or create more moving content!

Ask your followers to change the settings

Users have the option to change the settings of their feed, so you can choose 'See first', ''Default'' or ''Unfollow' per page. To show your followers all the content, you can ask them to change the settings for your page. When they put the settings on 'See First', they will always see your updates right away.

Practical Facebook tips

Finally, we would like to give you a few more practical tips to stay visible on Facebook. First of all, try to create valuable and shareable content. When your content is good, it will appeal to plenty of people who will share it. In this way, it still ends up with the target group you want to reach. You can also think about posting a message that evokes a discussion. This will generate a lot of interaction that Facebook only welcomes. As a final tip, I would like to inform you that Facebook is of course not the only social media channel where your customers get from. Therefore, focus on other channels. Maybe you can do a lot more with that than you think!
